The Delta Queen Steamboat Co. has selected Kimmswick to serve as its new homeport and operations base.

The company expects the historic Delta Queen steamboat to visit more than 80 U.S. ports, beginning and ending a number of its cruises each year in Kimmswick. However, the vessel must first secure a Congressional exemption to allow it to return to the overnight cruise trade. A federal law bans wooden ships from carrying overnight passengers.

Delta Queen officials said they hope to have the steamboat back in service in 2016.
